This Month in NASA History:
On May 9, 2003, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) spacecraft Hayabusa launched, beginning a 7-year round-trip journey to the asteroid Itokawa. The second probe to land on a near-Earth object and the first to return to Earth, Hayabusa spent several months at the asteroid to collect data about its shape, terrain, gravity, and most importantly to retrieve samples of surface material. Hayabusa returned home in June 2010, and its samples were taken for analysis. During the mission, NASA provided the services of its Deep Space Network to assist with communication and navigation of the spacecraft.
