This Month in NASA History:

On April 26 in 1971, acting NASA administrator George Low signed orders ending the Apollo quarantine program. Originally initiated to insure the containment of any possible bacteria brought back from the Moon and prevent a potential epidemic, the measure had required quarantine of astronauts and lunar samples for a period of 21 days. This practice was used for the first three lunar landings. After the Apollo 11, 12, and 14 missions showed no signs of dangerous contamination the program was terminated. In this picture from July 24, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin are welcomed by President Richard Nixon from within their Mobile Quarantine Facility.
