S131-E-010051: STS-131 crew

Five years ago today (April 7, 2010), Space Shuttle Discovery and the STS-131 crew docked at the International Space Station, joining the six astronauts already on the station to bring the number of Space Station residents up to 13. For the first time, four women were in space at the same time, and it also marked the first time that two astronauts from JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, occupied the station. During the 15-day mission, mission specialists Rick Mastracchio and Clayton Anderson completed three spacewalks totaling 20 hours and 17 minutes.

Early Bird

This Month in NASA History:

Today, we mark 50 years of satellite-enabled geosynchronous international commercial communication. The Communications Satellite Act in 1962 created a corporation known as Comsat with the aim of launching and managing satellites to be used for telecommunications. “Early Bird” was built by Hughes Aircraft Company (as it was known then) for Comsat. It was the first commercial communications satellite to be launched to geosynchronous orbit on this date (April 6) 1965.

Early Bird had 240 voice-channel capacity and from its position over the Atlantic Ocean linked Europe and America. It’s ability to carry television signals made the possibility of continuous “live via satellite” TV broadcasts a reality.

In the first image, engineers Ross Cooper (left) and Ray Bowerman checkout “Early Bird.” The second image is a letter from Associate Administrator Homer Newell congratulating Dr. Pickering, Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, on the success of the launch.
