This Month in NASA History:
On April 9, 1959, the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced the selection of seven men chosen as the nation’s first astronauts. Known as the Mercury 7, they were military pilots hailing from the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps who underwent a selection process that included weeks of strenuous physical and mental evaluations. In this picture from the news conference, Deke Slayton, Alan Shepard, Wally Schirra, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Gordon Cooper, and Scott Carpenter (seated left to right) all raise their hands after being asked which of them wanted to be the first in space.
